Hollywood superstars Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman are official joining forces once again to executive produce a high-octane sports documentary series. The project will shine a spotlight on the Australian SailGP team, known as the BONDS Flying Roos, which both actors co-own.
The upcoming series is scheduled to stream exclusively on Disney+ globally, with a domestic release on Hulu in the United States. The episodic narrative will follow Australia's elite sailors as they embark on a high-stakes global journey throughout the grueling competitive racing season.
The professional racing team is anchored by chief executive officer and skipper Tom Slingsby, who is widely regarded as one of the most decorated and successful competitive sailors in the world.
HOLLYWOOD STAR POWER MEETS ELITE RACING
The documentary project intends to highlight both the intense aquatic action and the unique ownership experiences of Reynolds and Jackman. The SailGP league features elite athletes operating identical fifty-foot catamarans that compete in coastal races, reaching breathtaking speeds of up to one hundred kilometers per hour.
Production duties will be handled by a collaborative effort between Reynolds' own production banner, Maximum Effort, and Eureka Productions. The companies are working in direct partnership with SailGP and the BONDS Flying Roos franchise.
Acclaimed filmmaker Brent Hodge has been tapped to serve as the primary director and showrunner for the series. Additionally, Humphrey Ker, who serves as executive director of Reynolds' football club Wrexham, is also on board the project as an executive producer.
A COMEDIC COLLABORATION ON THE WATER
In a joint statement, Reynolds and Jackman utilized their signature comedic chemistry to express their excitement for the project. The duo noted that this marks their first major collaboration since their record-breaking run on Deadpool and Wolverine, promising audiences plenty of action, comedy, and emotion with a lot more water.
This venture represents a familiar storytelling format for Reynolds. The actor has spent five seasons collaborating with Disney-owned FX to document the journey of his Welsh football club for the critically acclaimed, Emmy-winning docuseries Welcome to Wrexham.
While an official premiere date for the sailing documentary has not yet been announced, the series is already generating massive anticipation among sports fans and movie lovers alike.
